Firefox 104.0.2 fixes crashing, media playback and touch issues

Mozilla plans to release Firefox 104.0.2 to the Stable channel today. The new version of Firefox fixes an out of memory crash, video and audio playback issues, and issues when using touch-enabled devices or a stylus.

Firefox 104.0.2 will be released later today. Most installations will update automatically, using the browser’s built-in update feature. Some users prefer to update manually instead. Firefox can be downloaded from Mozilla official site once the new version is released.

Firefox 104.0.2

Firefox 104.0.2 fixes four non-security issues in earlier versions of Firefox. The first fixes a crashing issue that has plagued 32-bit versions of Windows since the release of Firefox 102.

According to error report on the Mozilla bug tracking site and the modified code in Firefox, it seems the problem was caused by report data specifications, which could be “arbitrarily long”. The issue is also being resolved in an upcoming Firefox 102 ESR update.

Two of the fixed issues in Firefox 104.0.2 relate to in-browser video and playback issues. Both sometimes affected the playback of video and audio content in Firefox, according to Mozilla.

The problem occurred when playing video and audio loaded via “a cross-origin frame src attribute” or with “Content-Security-Policy:sandbox”. Both issues were preventing media from playing and had similar causes. Firefox reused the answers from the original document in both cases for optimization. While this worked well for many use cases, it prevented media from playing. Firefox users should no longer experience the issues described after installing the new version on Stable or ESR.

The fourth and final issue relates to an issue that affected users of touch and stylus devices. The bug prevented touch and pen users from dragging the scroll bar across pages.

Firefox 104.0.2 is the second point release. Mozilla released Firefox 104 in late August and released Firefox 104.0.1 to fix a YouTube playback issue.

The next major stable version of Firefox is version 105. Mozilla plans to release it on September 20, 2022.

Now you: have you been affected by any of the problems described?
