EuroHPC JU launches two calls for R&I proposals

May 6, 2022 — The European Joint Undertaking for High Performance Computing (EuroHPC JU) publishes 2 new calls for proposals: a call for algorithms to prepare the transition to exascale supercomputers, capable of over a billion billion operations per second. While the other is aimed at National Competence Centers (NCCs) for HPC to expand the use of HPC across Europe as well as the coordination of European Centers of Excellence in HPC applications.

Call – New algorithms for applications on European exascale supercomputers

The objective of this call, HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2022-ALG-02-01, is to develop new algorithms to exploit the full potential of the next European exascale supercomputers. It will enable HPC applications to utilize these new computing capabilities in the future and address significant computing challenges that are currently unsolvable.

The call is funded by Skyline Europe, the EU funding program for research and innovation, with a total budget of up to €5 million. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking will provide funds to a consortium that will provide financial support to third-party projects, based on an open and competitive selection process, to develop new algorithms with the greatest possible impact.

The call will be open for submissions from April 20, 2022 to October 27, 2022, 5:00 p.m. (CET).

More details and all relevant documents regarding the call are available on the EU Funding and Tender Opportunities Portal.

Call – National Competence Centers for High Performance Computing

The purpose of this call, DIGITAL-EUROHPC-JU-2022-NCC-01, is to support existing NCCs and the creation of new NCCS in EuroHPC JU Participating States. The NCCs represent an HPC focal point in the participating country, liaising with national HPC initiatives, facilitating national stakeholders’ access to European HPC skills and opportunities in different sectors and industrial areas. Supporting SMEs is at the heart of the NCCs’ mission, but the local public sector, industry and academic institutions will also benefit from their activities. Through this action, the EuroHPC JU supports the broadening of HPC skills and the adoption of HPC by new users in the private and public sector.

The call will be open for submissions from April 20, 2022 to June 28, 2022, 5:00 p.m. (CET).

The call is funded by Digital Europe Program (DEP), an EU funding program focused on bringing digital technology to businesses, citizens and public administrations, with a total budget of €43 million. Each NCC is co-funded by its Participating States (50% cost sharing). Applications are invited for two topics:

More details and all relevant documents regarding the call are available on the EU Funding and Tender Opportunities Portal.

Background

EuroCC and CASTIEL, two R&I EuroHPC projects launched in September 2020, have built a European network of 33 NCCs for HPC across Europe. Both projects fill existing gaps in HPC skills while promoting cooperation and the implementation of best practices across Europe.

With both projects coming to an end in the coming months, the objective of the DIGITAL-EUROHPC-JU-2022-NCC-01 call is to continue these efforts and further develop the European network of CNCs.

More information on the achievements of these two projects is available in the Interview with Bastien Kollerthe coordinator of the two projects.
